When the GitHub Copilot was launched, it kicked out a storm in social media. As we all know, it works well with JavaScript, Typescript, Python, Ruby, and Go. Github Copilot uses the OpenAI Codex to suggest you code while working with your favorite IDE tools. This project drew on OpenAI Codex, and it is an AI programmer trained in open-source code. Seems like it's based on the Copilot model (so point 2 still holds) but it runs fully locally (so point 1 may be resolved).Microsoft started to work with OpenAI and launched the GitHub Copilot, an AI programmer. Sorry to be the one raining on the parade.ītw: If you have a Visual Studio Professional subscription it also comes with a copilot like AI auto-completion called IntelliCode. Overall I would have to recommend a very cautious approach here. The legality of Copilot being trained on OpenSource software (including the ramifications of what happens when Copilot drops a verbantim code statement into your code that was taken from a GPL licensed piece of software) is currently being tested in court: How much of your code is uploaded and what is the effect of this? Does it get incorporated into the model and will that then be used to provide suggestions to others outside the company?Ģ. It is not 100% clear what data github collects and what it is used for ( reads like a somewhat generic "we will use your data to improve stuff" statement).
We've been discussing this internally and the general feel is that there is a lot of unknown risk here.ġ.
